Introduction to Basic Slackware Starter

What is Linux?

Linux is the kernel of UNIX-like, written by Linus Torvalds and other developers. Linux runs on many different architectures, for instance on a machine IA32, IA64, Alpha, m68k, SPARC and PowerPC. The latest kernel and information about the Linux kernel can be found in the Linux kernel website: http://www.kernel.org. The Linux kernel is often confused with the operating system GNU / Linux. Linux is a kernel, not an complete operating system. GNU / Linux consists of the GNU operating system with Linux kernel. The following section provide a more complete description of GNU / Linux.

What is GNU / Linux?
In 1984 Richard Stallman started an ambitious project with the goal to create a system
operating a UNIX-like and free. The name of this system is GNU, which is an acronym for "GNU's Not UNIX ". Around the 1990s, all major components from the GNU operating system were written, except kernel. Two years earlier, in 1988, it was decided that the GNU project will use a micro- Mach 3.0 kernel as the foundation of its kernel. However, it took until 1991 for the Mach 3.0 to released under a free software license. In the same year, Linus Torvalds started to fill the gap in GNU system by writing the Linux kernel. GNU / Linux thus refers to a GNU system running Linux kernel. The GNU kernel, named "HURD" was still under development when this book was written, and is available as the operating system GNU / HURD. There are some other kernel ported to the GNU operating system. As For example, the Debian project has developed a version of the GNU operating system that works with the kernel NetBSD.

 What is Slackware Linux?
Slackware Linux is a GNU / Linux distribution, which is managed and developed by Patrick Volkerding.
A distribution is a coherent collection of software that provides GNU / Linux system that can used. Volkerding started using GNU / Linux because he needed a LISP interpreter for a project. In those days, GNU / Linux distribution is the dominant Softlanding Linux System (SLS Linux). Slackware Linux started as a private collection of the repair (patch) conducted by Volkerding for SLS Linux.
